يسعى العراق إلى استعادة مكانته التاريخية في صدارة إنتاج التمور عالميًا، بعد أن كان في الثمانينيات يمتلك أكثر من 33 مليون نخلة. ورغم تراجع العدد إلى نحو 13 مليون بحلول عام 2003، فإن الخطط الحالية أعادت العدد إلى 22 مليون نخلة، مع تطلع للوصول إلى 30 مليون خلال السنوات المقبلة.
وأعلنت وزارة الزراعة عن تعاقد مع شركة بريطانية لتوريد فسائل نخيل مكثرة بالتقنية النسيجية وتوزيعها على المزارعين بأسعار مدعومة، ضمن جهود تنمية بساتين النخيل وتحسين الإنتاج. كما حقق العراق صادرات تقارب 600 ألف طن من التمور خلال العامين الماضيين إلى أسواق أوروبا والخليج والمغرب والهند. وتعمل الوزارة على تعزيز القيمة المضافة عبر إنشاء مختبرات إكثار ومعامل للتعبئة والتغليف، إلى جانب إقامة معارض محلية ودولية لتسويق التمور العراقية.

Iraq is striving to regain its historic position as the world’s leading date producer, after once having more than 33 million palm trees in the 1980s. Although the number declined to about 13 million by 2003, current plans have raised it to 22 million, with ambitions to reach 30 million in the coming years.
The Ministry of Agriculture announced an agreement with a British company to supply tissue-cultured palm seedlings at subsidized prices, supporting farmers in expanding palm groves and improving yields. Iraq has also exported nearly 600,000 tons of dates over the past two years to markets in Europe, the Gulf, Morocco, and India. Efforts are underway to boost value-added production through new tissue culture labs and packaging facilities, alongside local and international exhibitions to promote Iraqi dates.
